Biography

Lata Mangeshkar, born 28 September 1929, is an Indian singer and occasional music composer. She is highly acclaimed as one of the most prominent playback singers in India. Mangeshkar has had a successful career that started in 1942 and has continued for over six decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung in more than thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, with a primary focus on Hindi. Additionally, she is the older sister of singer Asha Bhosle, Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Meena Mangeshkar. Mangeshkar is the second vocalist to receive the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian honor.
