Biography
Bill Chase, Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, all skilled jazz trumpeters with vocal and arranging abilities, formed the band Chase in 1970. They were supported by a rhythm section which included Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South (born Lucian Gondron) on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and Jay Burrid (born Jay Mitthauer) on percussion. Terry Richards completed the group as the lead vocalist for their first album. In April 1971, Chase released their debut self-titled album, which featured their most popular song, "Get It On". The single spent 13 weeks on the charts from May 1971. According to Jim Szantor of Downbeat magazine, the song showcased Chase's distinct brass sound, characterized by intricate trumpet melodies and technique. The band was nominated for a Grammy as Best New Artist, but ultimately lost to rising star Carly Simon.
