Inez Andrews

Biography

Inez Andrews (born Inez McConico on April 14, 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama) was an American gospel singer and recording artist. Inez began singing in the 1940s with two groups in Birmingham, Alabama: Carter's Choral Ensemble and The Original Gospel Harmonetts and was the co-leader of the group under Dorothy Love Coates. Coates recommended her to The Caravans where she sang with them in the 1950s and the early 1960s. Andrews biggest hit was Mary Don't You Weep. Fellow member Shirley Caesar dubbed her "The High Priestess" for her ability to hit high notes. In 1962, she left The Caravans to start her own group: Inez Andrews and The Andrewettes until 1967 when she embarked on her solo career. In 1972 she released her huge hit Lord Don't Move The Mountain which is her most memorable solo song. in 2006 she reunited with The Caravans and released the album Paved The Way. Inez died December 19, 2012 (age 83) after losing her battle with cancer. In 2013, former Caravans member Shirley Caesar said there never was and will never be another voice like Inez Andrews.
