Biography

Formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia, R.E.M. quickly became one of the pioneering alternative rock bands. The group consisted of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. Known for Buck's distinctive guitar style and Stipe's enigmatic vocals, they gained attention with their first single, "Radio Free Europe" in 1981. The following year, their debut EP called Chronic Town was released on I.R.S. Records. Their critically acclaimed debut album, Murmur, was released in 1983, solidifying their reputation. Constant touring and support from college radio stations further expanded their fanbase. In 1987, R.E.M. achieved mainstream success with the single "The One I Love". The band signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1988 and began addressing political and environmental issues in their music while performing in large arenas worldwide.
