Hace cinco años, un gran estadounidense, a cuya sombra simbólica nos encontramos hoy, firmó la Proclamación de Emancipación. Este trascendental decreto fue un gran faro de esperanza para millones de esclavos negros que habían sido chamuscados en las llamas de una injusticia fulminante. Llegó como un alegre amanecer que puso fin a la larga noche de su cautiverio.
Pero cien años después, el negro todavía no es libre. Cien años después, la vida del negro todavía está tristemente paralizada por las esposas de la segregación y las cadenas de la discriminación. Cien años después, el negro vive en una isla solitaria de pobreza en medio de un vasto océano de prosperidad material. Cien años después, el negro todavía languidece en los rincones de la sociedad estadounidense y se encuentra exiliado en su propia tierra. Y por eso hemos venido hoy aquí para dramatizar una situación vergonzosa.
En cierto sentido, hemos venido a la capital de nuestra nación para cobrar un cheque. Cuando los arquitectos de nuestra república escribieron las magníficas palabras de la Constitución y la Declaración de Independencia, estaban firmando un pagaré del que todo estadounidense sería heredero. Esta nota era una promesa de que a todos los hombres, sí, tanto a los negros como a los blancos, se les garantizarían los "derechos inalienables" de "la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad". Hoy es obvio que Estados Unidos ha incumplido este pagaré, en lo que respecta a sus ciudadanos de color. En lugar de cumplir con esta sagrada obligación, Estados Unidos le ha dado al pueblo negro un cheque sin fondos, un cheque que ha sido devuelto marcado como "fondos insuficientes".
Pero nos negamos a creer que el Banco de la Justicia esté en quiebra. Nos negamos a creer que no haya fondos suficientes en las grandes bóvedas de oportunidades de esta nación. Y por eso hemos venido a cobrar este cheque, un cheque que nos dará, cuando lo solicitemos, las riquezas de la libertad y la seguridad de la justicia.
También hemos venido a este lugar sagrado para recordarle a Estados Unidos la feroz urgencia del Ahora. No es momento de darse el lujo de refrescarse ni de tomar la droga tranquilizante del gradualismo. Ahora es el momento de hacer realidad las promesas de la democracia. Ahora es el momento de pasar del oscuro y desolado valle de la segregación al iluminado camino de la justicia racial. Ahora es el momento de levantar a nuestra nación de las arenas movedizas de la injusticia racial a la roca sólida de la hermandad. Ahora es el momento de hacer que la justicia sea una realidad para todos los hijos de Dios.
Sería fatal para la nación pasar por alto la urgencia del momento. Este verano sofocante del legítimo descontento de los negros no pasará hasta que haya un otoño vigorizante de libertad e igualdad. 1963 no es un final, sino un comienzo. Y aquellos que esperan que los negros necesitaban desahogarse y ahora estarán contentos tendrán un duro despertar si la nación vuelve a la normalidad. Y no habrá descanso ni tranquilidad en Estados Unidos hasta que al negro se le concedan sus derechos de ciudadanía. Los torbellinos de la revuelta seguirán sacudiendo los cimientos de nuestra nación hasta que surja el brillante día de la justicia.
Pero hay algo que debo decirle a mi pueblo, que se encuentra en el cálido umbral que conduce al palacio de justicia: en el proceso de ganar el lugar que nos corresponde, no debemos ser culpables de actos ilícitos. No busquemos satisfacer nuestra sed de libertad bebiendo del cáliz de la amargura y el odio. Siempre debemos llevar a cabo nuestra lucha en el alto plano de la dignidad y la disciplina. No debemos permitir que nuestra protesta creativa degenere en violencia física. Una y otra vez, debemos elevarnos a las majestuosas alturas de unir la fuerza física con la fuerza del alma.
La maravillosa nueva militancia que ha envuelto a la comunidad negra no debe llevarnos a desconfiar de todos los blancos, porque muchos de nuestros hermanos blancos, como lo demuestra su presencia aquí hoy, se han dado cuenta de que su destino está ligado al nuestro. . Y se han dado cuenta de que su libertad está indisolublemente ligada a la nuestra.
No podemos caminar solos.
Y mientras caminamos, debemos prometer que siempre marcharemos hacia adelante.
No podemos dar marcha atrás.
Hay quienes preguntan a los defensores de los derechos civiles: "¿Cuándo estarán satisfechos?" Nunca podremos estar satisfechos mientras el negro sea víctima de los horrores indescriptibles de la brutalidad policial. Nunca podremos estar satisfechos mientras nuestros cuerpos, pesados por el cansancio del viaje, no puedan conseguir alojamiento en los moteles de las carreteras y en los hoteles de las ciudades. No podemos estar satisfechos mientras un negro de Mississippi no pueda votar y un negro de Nueva York crea que no tiene nada por qué votar. No, no, no estamos satisfechos, y no lo estaremos hasta que "la justicia corra como aguas, y la rectitud como un impetuoso arroyo".¹
No se me escapa que algunos de ustedes han venido aquí pasando por grandes pruebas y tribulaciones. Algunos de ustedes han salido recién salidos de celdas estrechas. Y algunos de ustedes vienen de áreas donde su búsqueda de libertad los dejó azotados por las tormentas de la persecución y aturdidos por los vientos de la brutalidad policial. Ustedes han sido los veteranos del sufrimiento creativo. Continúe trabajando con la fe de que el sufrimiento inmerecido es redentor. Regresemos a Mississippi, regresemos a Alabama, regresemos a Carolina del Sur, regresemos a Georgia, regresemos a Luisiana, regresemos a los barrios marginales y guetos de nuestras ciudades del norte, sabiendo que de alguna manera esta situación puede cambiar y será cambiada.
No nos hundiremos en el valle de la desesperación, os lo digo hoy, amigos míos.
Y por eso, aunque nos enfrentamos a las dificultades de hoy y de mañana, todavía tengo un sueño. Es un sueño profundamente arraigado en el sueño americano.
Tengo el sueño de que un día esta nación se levantará y vivirá el verdadero significado de su credo: "Consideramos que estas verdades son evidentes por sí mismas: que todos los hombres son creados iguales".
Tengo el sueño de que un día, en las colinas rojas de Georgia, los hijos de antiguos esclavos y los hijos de antiguos dueños de esclavos podrán sentarse juntos a la mesa de la hermandad.
Tengo el sueño de que un día incluso el estado de Mississippi, un estado sofocante por el calor de la injusticia, sofocante por el calor de la opresión, se transformará en un oasis de libertad y justicia.
Tengo el sueño de que mis cuatro pequeños hijos algún día vivirán en una nación donde no serán juzgados por el color de su piel sino por el contenido de su carácter.
¡Yo tengo un sueño hoy!
Tengo el sueño de que un día, en Alabama, con sus racistas despiadados, con su gobernador de cuyos labios chorrean las palabras "interposición" y "anulación", un día, allí mismo, en Alabama, los niños y niñas negros poder unir nuestras manos a los pequeños niños y niñas blancos como hermanas y hermanos.
¡Yo tengo un sueño hoy!
Tengo un sueño que un día todo valle será exaltado, y cada colina y montaña serán rebajadas, los lugares ásperos se allanarán y los lugares torcidos se enderezarán; "y la gloria del Señor será revelada y toda carne juntamente la verá."²
Ésta es nuestra esperanza y esta es la fe con la que vuelvo al Sur.
Con esta fe, podremos sacar de la montaña de la desesperación una piedra de esperanza. Con esta fe, seremos capaces de transformar las discordias de nuestra nación en una hermosa sinfonía de hermandad. Con esta fe, podremos trabajar juntos, orar juntos, luchar juntos, ir a la cárcel juntos, defender la libertad juntos, sabiendo que algún día seremos libres.
Y este será el día, este será el día en que todos los hijos de Dios podrán cantar con un nuevo significado:
Mi país es tuyo, dulce tierra de libertad, de ti canto.
Tierra donde murieron mis padres, tierra del orgullo del Peregrino,
¡Desde cada ladera de la montaña, que resuene la libertad!
Y si Estados Unidos quiere ser una gran nación, esto debe convertirse en realidad.
Y así, que resuene la libertad desde las prodigiosas cimas de New Hampshire.
Que resuene la libertad desde las poderosas montañas de Nueva York.
Que resuene la libertad desde los crecientes Alleghenies de Pensilvania
