It's already dark at five o'clock
Windy and icy so early in the season
The cold comes up from the asphalt through my soles
And my neck is stiff from the cold
I carry home an empty soul
There's a beat in my limbs that keeps my feet in motion
And I always pause under the heater of a store for fifty counts before continuing home
The city is a lonely place with wall to wall people
You can walk for miles without saying hello
You can go for days without having a conversation
On a sunny day
Blue skies shine down between the tall buildings
And if you're lucky you'll see a bird soar with motionless wings
For a moment the city's not closing in
And you walk a little taller
But there's no horizon
