Biography
Demi Lovato, born Demetria Devonne Lovato on August 20, 1992, is a multi-talented American artist known for their work as a singer-songwriter, musician, actor, and activist. They actively engage in philanthropic endeavors, using their platform to raise awareness and support causes related to the environment, LGBTQ+ issues, racism, and social injustice. Lovato has also been a prominent advocate for mental health, having personally battled eating disorders, mental illnesses, and self-harm throughout their life.
In their early career, Lovato appeared in various roles, including Angela on Barney & Friends and Charlotte on the Disney short series As The Bell Rings. They gained significant recognition for their lead role as Mitchie in the 2008 film Camp Rock. Lovato further achieved success with their own Disney Channel television sitcom, Sonny with a Chance, and a co-lead role in the film Princess Protection Program. Following their struggles with self-harm and addiction, Lovato later became a judge on the television competition show The X Factor from 2012 to 2013.
In June 2018, Lovato made a public statement revealing a relapse after six years of sobriety, followed by a near-fatal drug overdose the following month. Their documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, disclosed details of their overdose, including three strokes, a heart attack, temporary blindness, and lasting brain damage leading to impaired eyesight. Taking time away from the spotlight to focus on healing and recovery, Lovato later came out as non-binary and changed their pronouns to they/them. They also identify as pansexual.
Lovato's talent as a vocalist has been recognized with two Grammy nominations. Their range spans from a lyric soprano with a vocal range of C3 to Bb5 to a whistle register. They have demonstrated versatility across various genres, including pop, rock, ballads, musical theatre, jazz, R&B, country, and soul.
