Pierino Ronald "Perry" Como, an American singer and television personality, had a successful career spanning over five decades. After signing with RCA Victor in 1943, he exclusively recorded for them and became known as "Mr. C." He sold millions of records for RCA and was a pioneer in the genre of weekly musical variety television shows. These shows, which aired from 1949 to 1963, set the standards for the genre and were incredibly popular. Como continued to host the monthly Kraft Music Hall variety program until 1967. His shows and specials were broadcast worldwide. In addition to his television success, Como was also a popular recording artist. He had numerous hit records, with such high sales that the label stopped counting at his request. No other artist at the time matched his combined success on television and in music. Como's appeal spanned generations and he was respected for his professional standards and personal conduct. In his official memorial in Billboard magazine, it was stated that he had "50 years of music and a life well lived. An example to all." Composer Ervin Drake also spoke highly of him, describing Como as someone who defied the expectations of others and still succeeded.
