Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known as Adele, is an English singer-songwriter and musician. In 2006, she was discovered by XL Recordings when her demo was shared on Myspace by a friend. She gained recognition in 2007 by winning the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" and BBC Sound of 2008. Her first album, 19, was released in 2008 and achieved both commercial and critical success. It went four times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US. Adele's popularity in the US was further boosted by an appearance on Saturday Night Live in late 2008. She received accolades at the 2009 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
